Facing off with the Kunlun Red Star, on the final weekend of the CWHL regular season, the Vanke Rays split a series with their Chinese counterparts.
In a strong offensive showing for Cayley Mercer (1 G, 3 A) and Emily Janiga (2 G, 1 A), the Rays defeated the Red Star by a final of 6-4 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Also exceptional in the win was goaltender Elaine Chuli who earned her fourth 40-plus save performance, recording 41 on the evening.
However, a victory just down the road by the Markham Thunder over the Boston Blades locked up fourth place for the Thunder.
In the teams regular season finale, the Rays and Red Star both started the matchup with all Chinese-born lineups including goaltenders Tianyi Zhang for Vanke and Yuqing Wang for Kunlun. Zhang showed strong resolve picking up 31 saves in the hard-fought loss, while Wang turned aside all 26 shots to earn the shutout over the Rays.
