CWHL action took over the GTA as China-based clubs, the Kunlun Red Star and Vanke Rays, made their way to the provincial capital to challenge the Toronto Furies and Markham Thunder.
Entering the weekend doubleheader in a chase for fourth in the CWHL with the Rays, the Markham Thunder made up ground with a decisive Saturday night win and hard-fought Sunday afternoon shootout loss. With points earned in both games, the Thunder now sit just three points behind the Rays and Calgary Inferno, however, the pair of frontrunners hold games-in-hand over Markham. Standout performances from the back-to-back included Thunder forward Jenna McParland, who recorded a Saturday night hat trick, and Rays goaltender Elaine Chuli, who made 84 saves between the two contests with three crucial stops in the Vanke shootout win.
